McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act​

McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act The McKinney-Vento Act is a federal law that ensures students experiencing homelessness have equal access to school, no matter their housing situation. A student qualifies if they lack fixed, regular, and adequate place to sleep – such as staying in shelters, motels, cars, or temporarily with others due to hardship.

Student Rights & Protections

Students protected under McKinney-Vento have the right to:
  • Immediate Enrollment even without documents (residency, immunizations, records) 
  • School Stability including staying in their school of origin it it’s best for them. 
  • Transportation to their school of origin or current school. 
  • Full Participation in classes, activities, and programs without barriers or fees. 
  • Support Services Including referrals for health, housing, and community resources. 
  • Unaccompanied Youth Protections inlcuding enrollment wihtout a parent and FAFSA support. 
  • Dispute Resolution with continued enrollment during any disagreement.
